L2TP SIMs

ISPs have used wholesale L2TP tunnels since the launch of ADSL broadband in the UK. Due to overwhelming demand, Jola is pleased to announce that wholesale mobile access from our SIMs is now available via L2TP. You can now cross-connect at layer 2 directly into our Jola platform.

Jola offers L2TP on Three, MultiNet and RoamNet SIMs.

Jola has also built L2TP, 1GB aggregated data, ‘Special’, L2TP tariffs where the overage rate is the same as the extremely competitive 1GB tariff rate.

Key benefits

Un-steered

Jola L2TP SIMs give un-steered access to all 4 UK mobile networks and over 330 networks globally.

Flexible

Jola’s L2TP SIMs are designed to support you as back-up / failover services, pre-Ethernet solutions or long-term, stand-alone internet access.

Control

ISPs now have access to a solution for mobile L2TP connectivity which can be easily adopted; no need to configure or manage private APNs or install additional CPE.

L2TP SIMs Frequently Asked Questions

What are L2TP SIMs?

L2TP SIMs are mobile data SIMs that build a secure Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol tunnel from the mobile network into the reseller’s own network. Jola provides the SIM and the tunnel; the reseller’s LNS (L2TP Network Server) terminates it and assigns each SIM a public or private IP from their own ranges. The SIM effectively becomes part of the reseller’s network.

How do L2TP SIMs work?

Traffic from the SIM is routed to Jola’s network from the carrier, then tunnelled via L2TP to the reseller’s LNS rather than out to the public internet. The LNS authenticates the session and allocates an IP, public or private, from the reseller’s own pool. Resellers manage their estate through Mobile Manager, our self-service portal, for activations, bars, alerts, tariff changes, and diagnostics.

What are L2TP SIMs used for?

Typical use cases include 4G and 5G failover for business broadband, primary connectivity for pop-up sites, kiosks, and digital signage, secure remote worker access, and IoT or M2M deployments needing predictable, addressable connectivity. They also suit CCTV, ANPR, EV charging, and any application where advanced network services are being delivered by the reseller.

What type of business are L2TP SIMs good for?

L2TP SIMs are designed for businesses with their own network infrastructure, particularly ISPs, MSPs, and IT resellers running an LNS who want to integrate mobile data into their existing network. They suit any organisation that needs to control IP allocation, routing, and authentication centrally rather than rely on Jola or Carriers.

What are the benefits of L2TP SIMs?

The key benefits are control, security, and integration. Resellers keep full ownership of IP addressing, routing, and authentication via their own LNS. Traffic bypasses the public internet, reducing exposure. Through Mobile Manager, resellers get full visibility of usage, and SIM status across the estate, with multi-network and unsteered options available for resilience.

Are L2TP SIMs suitable for IoT and M2M applications?

Yes, they’re a strong fit. IoT and M2M devices need secure communication, predictable addressing, and tariffs that match low or variable data use. L2TP SIMs deliver all three: tunnelled traffic without device-side VPN software, IPs assigned by the reseller’s LNS so each device is addressable on their network, and Jola’s pooled and aggregated tariffs to spread allowances across large fleets economically.
